When does the autumn term start in 2026, and why it differs by school

For most children in England, the autumn term 2026 starts in the first full week of September. Across the 51 schools Cyril holds a 2026 start date for, the earliest was Monday 31 August and the latest Wednesday 9 September, and the single most common first day was Monday 7 September.
The spread is wider than most parents expect, and the reason is nearly always the same: the school has put its INSET days at the front of the year, so the staff go back before the children do.
When exactly do schools go back in September 2026?

Two notes on reading that table honestly. The schools in it lean independent, which pulls the dates later than a set of state primaries would. And the Sunday entry is not a mistake: boarding schools record the day pupils return to school, which is the day before lessons start.
Why does one school go back 3 days before another?
Both schools owe their pupils the same 190 teaching days. What differs is where the 5 INSET days sit.
A school that takes 3 INSET days in the first week of September opens to children on the Thursday. A school that takes 1 in September and saves the rest for later opens on the Tuesday. Neither is giving children more or less time in school across the year. They have just front-loaded a different amount of it.
That is why the first days cluster where they do: the training days pile up on 1, 2 and 3 September, and the pupil start dates fall in behind them.
What about the day before, and the year groups that start separately?
Whole-school start dates are only half the picture.
Secondary schools very often bring Year 7 in on their own for a day, so the youngest year group finds the building without 1,000 other children in it. Sixth forms frequently start a day or 2 later, sometimes with enrolment rather than lessons. Primary schools stagger Reception across the first week or 2, with half days building up to full ones.
So the question "when does school go back" has a different answer for each child in the same family, and the answer for the eldest is the one least likely to apply to the others. Check the year group, not just the school.
How do I stop the first day catching me out?
The dates are announced in the summer term and used in September, which is the longest possible gap between hearing something and needing it.
Three things worth doing when the letter arrives, rather than in the last week of August:
- Put the first day in the calendar for each child separately, since the
year-group dates differ.
- Attach the practical things to it: what uniform, what kit, whether it is a
half day, what has to be signed and returned.
- Note the second day too, if the first is a staggered or half day, because
that is the one that trips up childcare.
